Buxton Humanists November 2009 Meeting

Humanist group to hear about Transition Buxton

Cath Johnstone from “Transition Buxton" will speak at the next meeting of the group to be held on Monday 16th November at 7.30pm in the piano lounge at the Old Hall Hotel.

A Transition Town comes into being when a group of local concerned individuals come together to consider how their own community can respond to the challenges, and opportunities, of Peak Oil and Climate Change. There are over 200 Transition Towns worldwide.

Humanists believe that we are all responsible for our own actions and the Transition movement is all about what we can do in our communities to redress the situation rather than just waiting for the government to act.

The last meeting of the group in October was entitled a Debate on Faith Schools but no-one turned up to speak for them so the talk and discussions focussed on the myth of faith schools performing better than community schools when like is compared to like, the blurring of the distinction between ethics and religion, and on the social divisiveness of faith schools.

It's good seeing things done at places you know of and I wish similar things were done in the UK to commemorate lives lost in war.

Sunday 18th October 2009

Haven't blogged for a while as I have had some sort of 'virus' that had me spend more time on the Loo than the Laptop - it has been one of those weeek's. Funnily enough, it has helped shift some weight off, so it isn't all negative :-)

Hope to catch up later.

Buxton Humanists Group

Buxton Humanists Group

About a dozen people met for the third meeting of the group held on 21st September at the Old Hall. Pat Thompson gave a talk on the pressure group “Dignity in Dying”, formerly “EXIT” and before that “The Voluntary Euthanasia Society”. The subject of the meeting was timely as interim guidance on assisted suicide were due out 2 days later. Pat discussed the aims of the group and gave some idea of the situation in other countries. She had also brought her “living will” and she explained how to obtain one and its legal status. There followed a lively discussion on many of the issues.

Next meeting of the Buxton Humanist Group will be on Monday 19th October in the piano lounge of the Old Hall Hotel, Buxton – 7pm for a 7.30pm start when Barry Thorpe will present his views on faith schools.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service

I attended a Focus Group today, organised by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, who are currently setting their draft budget for 2010/11 and Service Plan 2010/13 and were asking views on what those attending thought on how Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service should shape their final budget proposals and in doing so set their priorities for spending over the next three years.
One of the 9 Topics of discussion was 'engagement' - how do Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service interact with the general public ? One way was via their website, any comments on the website ?
